South Philly Review: People Protest Cutbacks in Fire Dept.

by Joseph Myers

Of South Philadelphia’s five engines, three are experiencing halts. Beginning Aug. 3 and repeating every fifth day, Engine 24, 1200 S. 20th St., has experienced day-tour closures from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Brown outs for Engine 3, 200-10 Washington Ave., commenced on Aug. 5 and follow the same schedule as Engine 24. By the end of the month, each will have had six recesses. The Philadelphia Fire Department — the fifth largest in the United States — constitutes 56 companies, with 23 of them subject to brown outs. During an engine’s day- or night-shift closing, personnel may find themselves traveling considerable distances to tend to a fire instead of addressing a potential inferno nearby.

\"\"The night-tour brown out for Engine 53 kept it closed from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. Friday into Saturday and will do the same Aug. 25. According to Bill Gault, president of the Philadelphia Fire Fighters’ Union Local 22, Engine 10, 1357 S. 12th St., and Engine 49, 2600 S. 13th St., will handle Engine 53’s calls during its gridlocks.

Shamong, New Jersey 08088-9497

Please come out and welcome home Sgt. Donnie Russell from serving a second tour in \"Welcome\" Iraq. His family history is that he comes from a long line of soldiers. The bio will be read at the homecoming, but the stories from Donnie’s grandfather lead him to want to join the military as his career of choice.

He joined the Army in April 2005, a little older and wiser than most of his class. He felt that this had meaning and knew he found his place. His first tour in Iraq was in Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2006-2008 with the 1st Calvary Division stationed at Ft. Hood, Tx. After returning home that December he met his wife Fran. They were married Feb. 2008.

While stationed at Ft. Hood in Sept. 2009 he re-enlisted and was transferred to Ft. Drum, NY to join the 10th Mountain Division. He left for his second tour to Iraq Oct. 2009 right after his daughter Isabella was born. Now he is returning August 2010 just in time for his daughters 1st birthday.

He has become a Sgt. 1e5 in C Co. 2-14 Infantry 10th Mountain Division.

\"Welcome_home_card-p137093887163556865t5tq_400\" He has a family who loves him and they would love to show it. Info provided by Jessica Gillen (his sister).

Please join the Warrior Watch Riders & Friends, Yellow Ribbon Club, and the Shamong Twp. Fire Department in making some noise as we bring this hero home in style.

Nutter: Killers Will Never Again Be A Menance To Philadelphians

August 18, 2010

Philadelphia, August 17 – Following the verdict of a Common Pleas jury sentencing the two defendants to life in prison without parole in the first degree murder of Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski, Mayor Michael A. Nutter issued the following statement:

\”While there is no sentence that could possibly bring back Sgt. Steve Liczbinski or erase the pain of his death, I hope that today brings some measure of closure for Michelle, Matt, Stephen and Amber. We keep them in our prayers, and they know that they are part of the bigger family of the Philadelphia Police Department and the City of Philadelphia. Steve is one of our heroes, and we will honor his memory by watching over his family.

I appreciate the jury’s commitment and dedication during their deliberations over these past weeks. Their initial verdict ensures that these killers will never again be a menace to Philadelphians, and that our city is safer with them behind bars for as long as they live.\”
